I'm currently appearing as a Male Super in the Glyndebourne production of Wagner's 'Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg' which runs until the end of June. It's a revival of the 2011 production directed by Sir David McVicar starring Gerald Finley in the lead role of Hans Sachs. The orchestra is the LPO conducted by Michael Güttler. Here is a snap of me and my other Male Super pals in our dressing room (I'm in the brown hat).

I'm currently rehearsing for the Ditchling Players next production The Nightingales a comedy by Peter Quilter in which I'm cast as Charlie. Set in the home of a cabaret star, Jack, the rhythm of his comfortable life is disturbed by the unexpected arrival of his parents, who were themselves a Music Hall act, ‘Charlie and Beat’. Why they have suddenly descended on Jack is unclear; then his mother disappears.

Jack’s stage partner, Maggie, is having relationship problems, which Jack could solve, and the ‘will they, won’t they’ path of Jack and Maggie weaves its way throughout the play.

I've also designed the poster.

Saturday 13th September was Haywards Heath Town Day. The Tour of Britain Cycle Race was scheduled to pass through the town at around midday immediately after which there was a parade through the main street of the The Royal Yeomanry, led by a military band. This was the prelude to the granting by Mid Sussex District Council of Freedom of Entry to the District to the Regiment whose headquarters are in Croydon. I was commissioned to produce an illuminated address to mark the event and managed to attend the ceremony and take a few photographs.

Nice surprise coverage of our exhibition and demonstrations at the White Horse in the West Sussex Gazette

Tuesday, 1 April 2014

Patricia Gidney, Max Brownrigg and I have been hanging our exhibition of paintings, calligraphy and collages at the White Horse Inn in Ditchling. It fills the bar and restaurant areas and consists of about 60 pieces. The exhibition runs until the end of June and during weekends and Bank Holidays in May becomes part of the Art in Ditchling Trail itself incorporated into Brighton Artists Open Houses. This is my very rough and ready snap of my corner of the bar. http://artinditchling.wordpress.com/

Yesterday was the opening of the Sir Norman Wisdom exhibition space in Haywards Heath organised by his son Nick. Nick, who once played county cricket for Sussex, owns a sports shop in the town and was my first client after I moved home from Cambridge to Ditchling back in 1995. My most recent commission was designing the lettering for his new shop fascia which was then fabricated in stainless steel by BEL Signs of Horsham.
For the exhibition Nick had me doing the calligraphic labelling for the framed panels and showcases. These contain memorabilia and artefacts from Sir Norman's career going back to his film and stage debuts back in the 1940s. For me it has been a wonderfully nostalgic trip to my childhood when, like the rest of the population, we were entranced by his antics in such films as The Square Peg. Latterly of course he became very popular, indeed revered, in Albania!

At the opening we were hugely entertained by this marvellous impersonator/lookalike Glenn Ford

Our next Ditchling Players production is 'Quartet' by Ronald Harwood at Ditchling Village Hall from 6th to 9th November. The play is set in a retirement home for opera singers and musicians. A gala concert is about to take place at the home to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Verdi's birth. This leads to a number of problems...
I designed the poster using Brioso Pro by my favourite type designer Robert Slimbach.

This is my painting of Bagnall 0-4-0 saddle tank Works No.2542 Jubilee built in 1936. I purchased this locomotive in the early 1970s from Bowaters at Sittingbourne and had it running on track laid at New Buildings Farm, Great Chishill near Royston, Herts. It is now at the East Anglian Railway Museum in Essex. (Oil on canvas 2011)
